The simplest rule of thumb is the one stitched right into your garment: the care label. If it says “dry clean,” bring it in for dry cleaning — the manufacturer has already determined that water, agitation, or heat could shrink, distort, or damage the fabric. If it says “machine wash” or “machine wash cold,” your everyday wash & fold service is the right call.
In general, everyday items like casual shirts, pants, t-shirts, socks, towels, and bedding are perfectly happy in a standard wash. Dry cleaning is the better choice for structured pieces — suits, sport jackets, dresses, skirts, blouses, ties, and coats — as well as anything labeled “dry clean only” or made from delicate materials that don’t respond well to water.
