Tailoring & Alterations

From a simple hem to a complete restyle — fitted to you.

For 35 years, Sophie's Cleaners has been the family-owned shop that local customers trust with the garments that matter most to them. Our on-site tailoring and alterations cover suits, dresses, shirts, trousers, and more. From a simple hem to a complete restyle, our tailors and seamstresses hem, resize, and restyle your garments for a perfect fit, fitted to you. Whether the job is a minor alteration or a full wardrobe refresh, the goal is always the same: clothing that fits the way it should and reflects who you are.

What We Alter

We alter and restyle the garments you already own. We do not manufacture new clothing from scratch, and we do not sell fabric or off-the-rack merchandise. What we do is take the suits, dresses, shirts, trousers, and coats already in your closet and make them fit the way they should, so you can experience the luxury of wearing garments tailored specifically for you.

The work itself falls into three categories. Hemming shortens trousers, sleeves, skirts, and dresses to the correct length. Resizing takes a garment in or lets it out so it follows your body instead of fighting it. Restyling goes further, reworking a piece so it reflects your individual style rather than the shape it left the rack with. Our tailors and seamstresses handle everything from a small hem on a pair of dress slacks to a complete reshaping of an unshapely vintage coat.

Off-the-rack clothing does not always fit perfectly, and it rarely reflects exactly who you are. Whether the job is a minor alteration or a complete wardrobe transformation, our skilled tailors and seamstresses are here to make your clothing fit like a dream, express your unique style, and make your vision a reality. From a simple hem to a full wardrobe refresh, every piece gets the same care and attention.

How It Works

Bring your garment to any of our three locations. Our on-site tailors and seamstresses look the piece over with you, listen to what you want changed, and tell you honestly what is possible. We then hem, resize, or restyle the garment on-site for a proper fit, and you return to pick up a piece that fits and feels the way it should.

Because every alteration is done on-site, you deal directly with the people doing the work. The garment stays in the shop, and the tailors who assessed it are the ones handling the needle and thread. Nothing is sent to an outside contractor, and there is no guesswork about who is responsible for the result. You can bring your garment to whichever of our three shops is most convenient, and the same standard applies at each one.

Pricing

Tailoring pricing varies with the garment and the scope of the job. A small hem and a full coat restyle are very different projects, so we quote each piece individually rather than publishing a flat price list. For an honest, specific quote, call any of our three locations or bring the garment in so our tailors can see it in person and assess the work involved. We are always happy to talk through the options before any work begins.

Tailoring & Alterations — common questions

Is the tailoring done on-site?
Yes. All tailoring and alterations are performed on-site at our shops by our own tailors and seamstresses. Because the work stays in-house, the garment never leaves the shop, and you deal directly with the people handling it.
What garments can you alter?
We alter suits, dresses, shirts, trousers and slacks, and coats. The work ranges from a simple hem to a complete restyle, including resizing, reshaping, and restyling your own garments so they fit properly and reflect your individual style.
Do you handle both small repairs and full restyles?
Yes. Whether it is a minor alteration like adjusting the hem on a pair of dress slacks, or a complete wardrobe transformation such as turning an unshapely vintage coat into custom-fitted couture, our talented tailors and seamstresses take on the full range and make your vision a reality.
Where can I bring my garment, and how long have you been in business?
Sophie's Cleaners is a family-owned business with 35 years of experience. You can bring your garment to any of our three locations: Scarsdale at 22 Garth Rd, Ardsley at 800 Saw Mill River Rd, or Washington Heights at 836 W 181st St. Our on-site tailors and seamstresses will assess the piece with you.
How much does tailoring cost?
It depends on the garment and the work involved. We do not publish fixed prices for alterations. Call or visit any of our three locations for a quote based on your specific garment and what you want changed.
